The things Tyler can do with coffee is amazing. The artistry is superb. There’s a really fun collection of beers and they make delectable cocktails. You never feel like a number or a a customer. You’re made to feel like you’re just with friends. This really is a treasure of an establishment.

This quaint café by day and hip cocktail bar by night is the quintessential hidden gem. Owner Tyler is the master of all things beverages from lattes, Matcha and espresso to flaming cocktails, made with artisan syrups to carefully selected beer and wine. What’s especially surprising is finding a place this amazing in the back alley of smalltown Danville Illinois. The quality and craftsmanship is more typical of Austin, Portland or NYC with Midwest pricing.

In fact Tyler far spent time honing his craft and secret recipes far and wide before returning to set up his own shop. Open Tuesday-Saturday for coffee and more the 7-7 Friday and Saturday.

As we were visiting on a Saturday to celebrate my sister-in-law’s birthday, she introduced us to Tyler and his magic. We stopped in late morning and enjoyed espresso, a lavender infused lemonade and picturesque hot chocolate. But I was also eyeing the cocktails on the 5-page menu so we swung back around at about 6:30 pm where I enjoyed an amazing whisky sour and my wife had a refreshing “pain killer”. While he doesn’t really serve food, he does offer small cheese plated for the a very great price.

Absolutely not to be missed but expect cozy quarters the place holds maybe a dozen or so. Also check out the “secret menu” posted on the back of the framed picture on the left as you enter.

Experience big city quality in an intimate small town shop. The owner, Tyler, has an exciting menu of creative drinks for any palate. The menu is written in his personal notebook, assuring anyone that the drinks are well thought out and designed from the heart. The espresso martini I had was expertly crafted and spectacular. This shop is located right behind a board game store, and they share a lounge so there is a charming vibe about the place. If you’re looking for creative coffee or cocktails, Obsidian is the place to go!

Obsidian stands alone in the category of establishments that thrive on the incredible depth of knowledge, skill, and creativity of it's owner. Tyler is such a kind, compassionate person that has built me more individualized, inventive drinks than I can count. He truly understands flavor. My recommendation - come in with an open mind, talk with Tyler a bit, and let him make you something. Or try something you're not sure about from the menu - I'm very, very picky and have never been disappointed.

I stopped in with my daughter, who enjoyed her White Chocolate Rose latte. My espresso had a nice bit of fruity brightness, but to my taste was lacking in body, sweetness, or intensity. But it wasn't over extracted or bitter, and is still well above average. I'll be back, and I'll see if I can get a ristretto or otherwise come up with something more my style. The owner/barista is friendly and engaging. 🙂

Update: a shorter pull did the trick! Intense, with a nice body and a great fruity acidity that wasn't harsh or overly bright.

Also impressed with the liquor selection for such a cozy space, but that will have to be explored in another trip.
