Live using the Elwood house as a place to photograph, or as backdrop. Ellwood, Glidden, and a 3rd party, invented barb wire in the 1800's. It was the first Mansion built in Dekalb at that time. There is the Mansion, tour, carriage house, grain silo, dollhouse built for the children and a new museum to tour. Don't miss out!

This is the mansion of the Ellwood family who were the producers of barbed wire. The docent gave a history of the family, their history, and the history of the house. She was very knowledgeable and of particular interest to our group was the history of the charming children's playhouse which is pictured. The groups are beautifully maintained with colorful flower beds, adding to the beauty of the mansion.

What a wonderful history lesson! So many of the pieces in this home are original to the family, which is a real bonus to see.
I live close by in Sugar Grove and always wanted to take the tour and learn more about the history of barbed wire. My cousin came in from out of town, and I it finally prompted me to do this with her. We toured both the Elwood properties and the Glidden home. We recommend it to anyone.

Our tour guide was new but very knowledgeable about the Ellwood and the house! The tour was amazing and the house was spectacular:) they even had this little house and we got to go inside, didn't think we'd fit but we did! I went with my family so it was definitely a good experience, would have to book for the other houses!

I wish I could remember the tour guides name, but he was excellent! Very knowledgeable about the family and time period. He was also very patient with all the questions I asked.

Head's up: No photography allowed in the home. Personally, that defeats the purpose of my visit, if I can't take photos of places I've visited in my life. But you can take photos of the outside of the house and get up close to the windows and take photos of the living room as you stand on the porch. There's also a visitor center, where photos ARE allowed and you can learn about Elwood's history.

Staff was pretty nice. They greeted me & told me where the restrooms are located & then they went back to work in their office. They just let me walk through the visitor center like a ghost walking through the halls. That's fine by me! I rather be a ghost than have staff drill me with questions like I have in other museums:

Where are you visiting from?
Where do you live?
How did you hear about us?
Have you visited our website?
Have you visited us before?
Where are you going after the museum?

I'm JUST passing through... Dang!
